Industrial & Mining LED Lighting Guide

In mining and heavy industry, lighting is a safety system, not an accessory. Machines run 20-hour shifts in dust, vibration and wash bays. This guide explains the test standards that predict field reliability — and how to read a supplier's test reports instead of their brochure.

Judge suppliers by their test reports, not their brochure

Every supplier claims "IP68, durable, reliable". Few can show you the paperwork. Ask for: salt-spray duration, UV-aging hours, ISO 16750-2 electrical test results, and photometric scans.

Aurora publishes sanitized versions of its real test reports — salt spray, UV aging, overvoltage, ramp, reverse-polarity and photometric scans — in the public Test & Research Center. If a supplier cannot produce equivalent evidence, price comparisons are meaningless.

Electrical robustness: what kills lights on heavy machines

Mining and construction electrical systems produce load dumps, transients and brownouts. ISO 16750-2 defines the relevant tests: long-duration overvoltage (18 V on 12 V systems), transient overvoltage spikes, voltage ramp up/down, and reverse polarity.

Specify lights documented against all four. A light that only survives "12V nominal" will die in its first month on a 48V truck with a tired alternator.

Wide-voltage 10–60V class for mining fleets

Mining dump trucks, shovels and electric-drive machinery run higher system voltages with wide swings. The 10–60V class covers these platforms and survives regenerative transients.

Corrosion and UV: the multi-season test

48 h of salt spray proves nothing; the industry-credible thresholds are 480 h on lamp bodies and 720 h on brackets and fasteners. UV aging at 1000 h UVA-340 verifies lenses do not crack or haze under high-altitude sun.

These are exactly the durations in Aurora's published salt-spray and UV reports — use them as your benchmark when comparing suppliers.

Photometric compliance for worksite lighting

For machines operating on public roads or in ECE jurisdictions, driving beams must comply with ECE R48 chromaticity. Full photometric scans (EVERFINE-class goniophotometers) verify the beam does what the layout drawing promises.

Request the photometric file (.ldt/.ies) for lighting design software — reputable manufacturers provide it per SKU.

Buying from a manufacturer: ask every supplier for test reports behind these specs — salt spray hours, IP test evidence, photometric scans and certification numbers you can verify yourself. Aurora publishes its full test evidence in the Test & Research Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

What lighting does a mining dump truck typically run?

A common layout: 2 wide-flood pods on the front bumper, 2 spots high on the cab for spotting, floods on the ladder and deck areas for maintenance access, and reversing floods on the rear — all 10–60V class.

How often should industrial LED lights be replaced?

Quality units are fit-and-forget: 50,000 h outlives the machine's overhaul cycle. Plan only lens cleaning and periodic mount checks. Budget lights commonly fail within 12–18 months, doubling the true cost of ownership.

Are your test reports available in English?

Original reports are issued in Chinese under our quality system; full English translations are available on request — contact the engineering team via the contact page.

Can you supply lights certified for underground coal mining?

Intrinsically safe (explosion-proof) requirements for underground coal need dedicated ATEX/IECEx designs — contact engineering with your zone classification. Surface mining and mineral processing are covered by the standard 10–60V industrial line.
