LED Work Light Buying Guide

A work light lives a harder life than any other light on a machine: it is pressure-washed, shaken by hydraulics, and powered by dirty electrical systems. This guide explains how to pick work lights that survive — based on the same test standards Aurora uses in its own lab.

Match the voltage class to your machine — not just "12V or 24V"

Machinery electrical systems are noisy: cranking dips, alternator transients, load dumps. A "9–36V" light covers 12V and 24V systems with regulation headroom; heavy equipment and mining trucks with 48V systems need the 10–60V class.

Ask whether the light is tested for transient overvoltage, voltage ramp and reverse polarity (ISO 16750-2). These are the three electrical events that kill work lights in the field.

Vibration rating is the #1 lifespan factor

Excavators and harvesters subject lights to constant 3-axis vibration. Lights tested to ISO 16750-3 (road vehicle) or J1455 (heavy truck) profiles survive; consumer-grade lights crack solder joints within months.

Physically check: a quality work light has a fully potted driver, no loose internal wiring, and steel or brass inserts in the mount — not plastic threads.

IP68 vs IP69K — and why washdown matters

IP68 protects against submersion (rain, fording, flood fields). IP69K adds resistance to close-range high-pressure, 80°C jet wash — mandatory if the machine goes through a wash bay.

Look for evidence, not labels: a 720-hour salt-spray result (GB/T 10485 / ASTM B117) on the mounting hardware predicts how the light looks after five winters. Aurora's published test reports show exactly these durations.

Choose beam shape by task

Flood: loading, trenching, harvester headers — anything within 30 m of the machine.

Spot: spotting trucks at 100–200 m, road grading, canal work.

Oval / elliptical combo: the general-purpose choice for mixed work.

Mounting and aiming checklist

Bolt to flat steel, not plastic guards. Use the adjustable bracket to aim each light separately; two floods angled 30° apart cover a work face better than one big light.

Leave a service loop in the wiring and run it through a grommet — cable fatigue at the entry gland is a common failure point.

Buying from a manufacturer: ask every supplier for test reports behind these specs — salt spray hours, IP test evidence, photometric scans and certification numbers you can verify yourself. Aurora publishes its full test evidence in the Test & Research Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my work light flicker when the hydraulic pump engages?

Voltage sag below the light's low cutoff. Either the electrical system is weak, or the light has a high minimum-voltage threshold. Choose lights with a wider operating band (9–36V) that hold output down to 9V.

Can I use a 9-36V light on a 48V mining truck?

No — it will overheat the driver and fail. Use the 10–60V class, which Aurora supplies for mining dump trucks and similar equipment.

How many work lights does an excavator need?

Typical setup: 2 floods on the cab sides, 1 spot on the boom, 1 flood on the counterweight for the swing radius. Machines in night mining often run 6–8 units.

What is the realistic service interval?

Quality LED work lights are essentially fit-and-forget: 50,000 h LEDs outlive the machine. Plan only for lens cleaning and mount bolt checks.
